Having the foresight to put together something this large is certainly not for just anyone. When your ‘contest’ spans across an entire continent, then we are talking big numbers here and the type of pressure that comes with the territory.
Nothing new to John Rowley, who has ‘been there, done that.’
The international best-selling author has gone from sweeping the floors as a janitor to managing real estate for multi-millionaires, so taking on big tasks is old hat for him. But this is one that takes a pair of brass balls!
“How can I have a little impact?” Rowley asks no one in particular. “I’ve owned a gym (R&J Health Studio in Brooklyn, made famous by Lou Ferrigno in “Pumping Iron”) in the past, have some best-selling books out there, but I wanted to make a bigger impact.”
Five years ago, Rowley came up with an idea that would challenge both the United States and Canada, having an interactive map showing the obesity rate in the respective state or province and having the amount of weight lost by the participants. Hence, the 52-Million Pound Challenge was born.
Rowley describes the challenge site as more akin to “an online magazine,” with 20 active best-selling fitness authors providing daily content. With a background in bodybuilding, Rowley wants to appeal to a more diverse audience and has brought on writers more affiliated with Pilates, general fitness and the like.
Registration ends on January 2, 2014 and consists of both men and women 18 and older. Family, friends and peers will narrow down the field to the top 25 in each and the challenge team will then take it down to the top 10. The winners will then be determined via a Facebook vote.
