Niacin Puts Lead in Your Pencil

Niacin Puts Lead in Your Pencil
Drugs called statins improve blood fat levels and reduce the risk of heart attack in people with significant heart disease. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in people with coronary artery disease and is an early warning sign of heart attack. Statins improve erectile function in these men. Niacin is a B vitamin that also has positive effects on blood fats. In Hong Kong, a study of men with mild to severe ED showed that niacin supplements (1500 milligrams per day for 12 weeks or fake niacin placebo) improved erectile function by nearly 100 percent in men with moderate to severe ED. Niacin did not improve erectile function in men with mild–to–moderate erectile problems. Long-acting niacin probably works best for preventing ED. (Journal Sexual Medicine, published online)
