Genes Play a Powerful Role in Obesity

In 2013, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease. Ninety-five percent of people who lose weight gain it back again within 12 months. Obesity and being overweight are difficult health problems that are highly resistant to cure. British researchers, in a review of literature, concluded that while diet and exercise are important, biological factors related to genetic control need more research emphasis. Genetic factors, influenced by the environment, can lead to weight gain due to increased appetite and reduced energy expenditure. The researchers challenged scientists to study the interaction between genetics and environment so that we can develop more effective treatments against obesity.
