Zinc Levels Predict Prostate Cancer Survival Rates

Zinc Levels Predict Prostate Cancer Survival Rates

Zinc is an essential mineral in the diet. It is a powerful antioxidant that is important for DNA repair, preventing cell death, promoting immune system health, and preventing inflammation.

A Swedish study found that in men with prostate cancer, zinc levels at diagnosis was an important predictor of the death rate from prostate cancer and death from all causes. They assessed the influence on blood zinc levels in men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1989 and 1994, and their survival rate through 2009. Other studies found that blood zinc levels are important for preventing several types of cancer and diseases, such as the common cold. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 93: 586-593, 2011)
