Garlic Builds Muscle Mass

Weight loss, muscle atrophy, protein breakdown, and reduced appetite are common in patients with cancer and other debilitating diseases. Several promising nutrients (nutraceuticals) may prevent cell wasting.

Spanish researchers measured the effects of genistein, resveratrol, epigallocatechin gallate, and diallyl sulfide (DAS) on laboratory cells subjected to intense heat. While all of the compounds prevented cell deterioration, DAS— which is found in garlic— was most effective. Researchers found increases in muscle weight in healthy animals given DAS. If these results apply to humans, DAS (garlic) might be an effective anabolic supplement. (Clinical Nutrition, 30: 33-37, 2011)
