Eat Nuts in a Shell to Consume Fewer Calories

Eat Nuts in a Shell to Consume Fewer Calories
Most people need to be protected from themselves. Put a giant bowl of chocolate or potato chips in front of college students and they will scarf it down like white sharks on a feeding frenzy. What would happen if you made it more difficult for them to snack? Scientists from Eastern Illinois University gave college students pistachios, either with or without shells, and let them eat all they wanted during class. Students eating the pistachios without shells consumed 211 calories, while those eating the nuts with shells ate only 86 calories. This study showed that either college students are lazy or not very good at shelling pistachio nuts. (Appetite, 57: 414–417)
