Low Glycemic Index Diets Best for Weight Control
Glycemic index is a measure of how fast a food increases blood sugar. Proteins, complex carbohydrates and fats are low glycemic index foods. Low glycemic index meals are typically high in fiber, which delays carbohydrate absorption and hunger. A review of literature by Brazilian scientists concluded that people lose weight and maintain lost weight better when consuming low glycemic index meals. People following the diet showed better blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity. Researchers examined studies published since 1995. They concluded that consuming a low glycemic index diet is an effective way to control bodyweight and prevent chronic diseases associated with obesity. (Nutricion Hospitalaria, 26: 48-55)
