Caffeine Prevents Weight Regain After Calorie-Shifting Diets

The body goes into a metabolic conservation mode during chronic dieting. During starvation, metabolic rate slows and appetite increases, making it very difficult to sustain prolonged low-calorie diets. Calorie shifting is a weight-loss technique involving periods of low-calorie dieting followed by several days of normal eating patterns. The theory behind the method is that metabolic control mechanisms never enter the starvation mode. An Iranian study showed that caffeine supplements promoted weight loss and prevented weight regain during calorie-shifting dieting. Caffeine prevented reductions in resting metabolic rate and helped suppress hunger. (Iranian Journal Pharmacological Research, 13: 707-718, 2014)
