Whey But Not Soy Protein Promotes Weight Loss
Daily consumption of protein supplements helps curb appetite, increases muscle mass and promotes fat loss. David Baer and colleagues from the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland found that people consuming 56 grams of whey protein per day lost nearly 5 pounds in 23 weeks compared to no weight loss in people consuming an equal amount of soy protein. Whey protein is digested and absorbed faster than other proteins and has a high leucine content. Leucine activates the mTOR pathway, which is series of chemical reactions in cells that initiates protein synthesis. Whey protein is an important dietary component in anyone trying to increase muscle hypertrophy and in older adults trying to maintain muscle mass. (Journal Nutrition, 141: 1489–1494)
