Whey Protein Strengthens Antioxidant Defenses
The body produces reactive oxygen species naturally during metabolism. These chemicals are highly reactive and contribute to aging, cell membrane destruction, DNA breakdown, and suppression of the immune system. However, they are also important for stimulating growth of muscle tissue and mitochondria (the powerhouses of the cells). Whey protein supplements may be important in regulating reactive oxygen species.
Spanish researchers found that administering whey protein to rats for eight weeks increased markers of antioxidants (glutathione) and decreased markers of oxidative stress (muscle protein carbonyl content and TBARS). The study found that whey protein improved antioxidant defenses and prevented structural fat and protein breakdown in the cells. (European Journal of Nutrition, published online November 3, 2010)
