Trekking Poles Decrease Injuries During Nordic Walking
Nordic walking involves brisk walking or hiking using trekking poles. The poles promote more forceful, longer strides than normal, which increases the caloric cost of walking by about 20 percent. Trekking poles also decrease the risk of injury and discomfort during mountain hikes.
British scientists discovered that people using the poles reported a lower perception of effort and reduced muscle pain and soreness during and after a climb of Mount Snowdon in Wales. Nordic walking is a terrific fat burner and an enjoyable activity that you can do almost anywhere. (Medicine Science Sports Exercise, 43: 140-145, 2011)
