Erectile Dysfunction Common in COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disorder that makes it hard to breathe. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma. Symptoms include distressed breathing, coughing, sputum production and wheezing. COPD patients also experience sexual problems such as decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction and loss of sexual vitality. Turkish researchers found that low blood oxygen levels, smoking and decreased physical activity were important triggers of sexual dysfunction in COPD patients. Erectile dysfunction severely decreased the quality of life in these men. Sexual counseling should be part of the COPD treatment plan.
