Meal replacement drinks are a proven weight-loss method. Most studies found that substituting weight-loss drinks for two or three meals per day helped people lose weight, and consuming the drinks one or two times per day helped maintain lost weight. A study from the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Massachusetts found that meal replacement beverages (Slim•Fast, twice daily) plus a behavior-modification program (“Weigh to Stay”) promoted weight loss better than Weigh to Stay alone. Soldiers consuming the diet drinks lost more weight (2.6 more pounds), percent body fat (1.0 percent) and fat mass (1.6 pounds) than those receiving counseling alone. Meal replacement drinks are an effective way to lose weight and keep it off. (Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 110: 268-273)
