High-Protein, Low-Calorie Diets Promote Weight Loss

High-protein diets are effective for preventing or treating obesity because they increase metabolism, suppress appetite and reduce caloric intake— according to a literature review led by Heather Leidy from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, and colleagues. Comparisons of weight-loss diets high in carbohydrates, protein or mixed nutrients consistently show that the high-protein diets are most effective for weight loss. As expected, high-protein diets are most effective in people who actually adhere to the weight-loss program. High-protein diets contain between 1.2 and 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. Each meal should contain 25 to 30 grams of protein.
