CrossFit Linked to Neck Artery Injury

Three case studies by Albert Liu from UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California linked CrossFit to carotid artery dissection (CAD)— a breakdown in the structure of the arteries supplying blood to the brain and head. CAD is a risk factor for stroke, and generally caused by trauma. The injured blood vessels can easily form clots that can travel to the brain and cut off the blood supply. The researchers admitted that they couldn’t say for sure that CrossFit caused the injuries, but the evidence strongly suggests that they were related. (Emergency Radiology, 22: 449-452, 2015)
