Elastic Bands Provide Additional Resistance During Weight Training

Many serious weight trainers use elastic bands to provide variable resistance during large muscle lifts such as the squat and bench press. Bands might increase power, rate of force development and speed. A University of Louisiana Study showed that elastic band training increased maximum bench press strength better than free weights alone. Another study using squats found that the addition of elastic bands during training increased the rate of force development. Elastic bands add another dimension to weight training that could help promote power, strength and muscle hypertrophy. John Wilson and Matthew Kritz from New Zealand provided practical guidelines for incorporating elastic bands into strength and conditioning programs.
